New Orleans is well-versed in the love affair with fried and sugared dough. Right-minded locals and visitors make regular pilgrimages to the city's beloved beignet cafes, and we battle over who serves 'em best as much as we debate the merits of a roux vs. okra gumbo.  But we're not talking about that kind of doughnut here. We're talking about the round, yeast-raised beauties that most of the rest of the country recognizes as The American Doughnut. The beignet will always be New Orleans' premier doughnut, but these shops go above and beyond turning out local craft doughnuts (think: King Cake, Bananas Foster, Satsuma Cream).
