Summer Cocktails: Un Poco de Realidad at Bouligny Tavern

Bouligny Tavern, the smart little sibling bar next to John Harris’s timeless Lilette, is a page out of the ’60s—an anachronistic walk into a time that will never get old. We can’t get enough of their icy dream of a cocktail: Un Poco de Realidad.

In the New Orleans summertime heat, this cocktail appropriately feels like a sweet departure from our reality. Snowball ice gets piled high in a glass and the striking color pops against the cool, dark wood-paneled walls inside Bouligny.

“The ingredients are a mild homage to tiki drinks. It’s very rich, refreshing and fruity, with a hint of bitterness. Your first sip is full of exuberant upfront flavor, but not one major note disappears. It evolves on your palate, and it changes as you sip it,” says Cary Palmer, general manager, bar manager and creator of Un Poco.

A base of white rum and aged rum gives the drink a richness that’s brightened with a bit of orange juice and grapefruit syrup. The added Aperol gives it a tiny bit of bitterness. All of this is shaken and poured over a mound of shaved ice.

This adult snowball is the perfect summer cocktail for the northernmost Caribbean city. A note from someone who has been there: It’s a sipping drink, although you’ll want to guzzle it.
